Corridor Planning Project

Austin, Texas

Client: City of Austin

Project Summary: The City of Austin selected TGC to develop a new corridor planning process to create traditional urban corridors using smart growth principles. The planning process will enhance the relationship between land use and transportation planning. Phase I of Austin Corridor Planning included identifying potential corridors and developing a systematic framework for corridor planning to complement the existing neighborhood planning process.

Project Highlights

The focus of corridor planning is on what could be called Traditional Neighborhood Corridors. These corridors should have sufficient right-of-way to include public space and adequate access to several transportation modes. They provide the shared public space for vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, and transit riders. Corridor planning is one of the initiatives recommended by the Citizens Planning Implementation Committee, and is a new tool for Austin to address the pressures that rapid growth places on land use, transportation, and infrastructure.

TGC identified 35 corridors and completed an initial assessment for potential development into Traditional Neighborhood Corridors.

TGC prepared a guidebook that provides a detailed description of how the City Department of Planning will work with corridor planning teams.
