Project Profile
Main Street Corridor Redevelopment Program
Houston, Texas
Client: City of Houston
Project Summary: The Main Street Coalition, representing public and private stakeholders, is spearheading the redevelopment of Houston's Main Street.
Project Highlights
The Main Street Corridor is located in the heart of the Houston region running from Buffalo Bayou through Houston’s Downtown, Theater, and Museum districts to the Astrodome at the 610 Loop. Main Street links two important economic nodes–Downtown and Texas Medical Center–as well as entertainment, cultural, and government centers in Houston.
The Main Street Corridor Redevelopment Program was initiated to combine the diverse interests and activities along the corridor, eliminate and reduce blight, implement short-term priority projects, build momentum and test concepts, and create consensus among the public in support of the redevelopment program.
TGC was selected by the Coalition to coordinate various corridor master planning efforts; assist in the designation of the Main Street Corridor under the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Livable Communities Initiative; and obtain federal grant funding for priority projects.
TGC also planned pilot projects to establish transit linkages that will reinforce the utilization of public transportation as a primary mode for mobility in the Main Street Corridor. TGC developed a Concept Plan for corridor redevelopment, along with redevelopment and funding strategies.
