Project Summary: At the time of the study only two percent of Fort Lauderdale’s downtown workers used public transit to get to work – a slim margin compared to many cities. In order to make the downtown area a better place to work, live and play, the Downtown Development Authority retained TGC to create a master plan of market-driven transit options and pedestrian enhancements for the downtown area. Scope of activities included:
Project Highlights
Refine Existing Mobility Data & Information
By comparing current demand and transit level of service, TGC’s plan eliminated $13.3 million in potential capital costs and $2.2 million in potential annual operating costs.
Transit Study
Existing bus routes were modified or eliminated. New routes were recommended based on linkages with regional routes, future development plans, and demand measured by detailed surveys targeting downtown workers. All operating and capital cost plans were subjected to peer review. TGC also modeled cost and service scenarios for alternative technologies, such as light rail and bus rapid transit, to understand the how they could be deployed to better link the major activity centers.
Livable Communities Initiative
TGC’s master plan addresses the transit/pedestrian improvements designed to enhance revitalization and transit-oriented development. TGC insured that $12 million in capital investments made to enhance pedestrian access were protected for future federal funding eligibility through a Letter of No Prejudice (LONP).
