Project Profile
Palm Desert People Mover System
Palm Desert, California
Client: City of Palm Desert
Project Summary: The City of Palm Desert is planning the development of a people mover system to connect more than 2 million square feet of development in the growing commercial/retail core of Palm Desert, California.
Project Highlights
The area is bisected by a major state highway that serves as the primary linkage for the communities in Coachella Valley. The mile-long system will be elevated to avoid conflicts with the state highway and other major arterials. The system will improve circulation in the area, reduce cold starts and vehicle-miles traveled, and enhance economic development.
Feasibility/Environmental Studies
In 1994, TGC completed the Palm Desert People Mover System Planning Report which included the following:
* Identification of demand for the proposed area
* Establishment of a system alignment
* Review of technology options
* Investigation of joint development of station locations
Grant Development
From 1992 to 1995, TGC assisted the City of Palm Desert in pursuing federal and state funding for the people mover project. In 1994, a $5 million earmark of federal Section 3 funding was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives.
